Runners and walkers to hit the streets for Chester Kiwanis 5K

    Runners and walkers will converge on the streets of Chester this Memorial Day weekend for the Kiwanis Club's annual fundraiser.
    The Chester Kiwanis 5K race starts at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 25.
    Race day registration is from 7:30 to 8:35 a.m. in the Village of Chester Community Park on Vadala Lane. The USTA certified course, measured by Brian Cavanagh, takes runners through Chester's historic downtown.
    A post-race hot breakfast is included in the fee for all registered runners.
    Entry fee
    The entry fee for students is $17 if registration is before May 23, and $20 on race day. The fee for adults is $20 before May 23 and $25 on race day.
    A portion of each runner's entry fee will be donated to the First Presbyterian Church of Chester. Register online at raceroster.com/22292. To register by mail, send checks payable to Kiwanis Club of Chester and send them to the club at P.O. Box 483. Tech tee-shirts are guaranteed to all entrants who register by May 19.
    Other local causes to benefit from the proceeds include high school scholarships, kindergarteners' welcome bags, the Christmas Toyland drive, veterans, Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, March of Dimes, and other local charities. Kiwanis' mission statement is that its volunteers are "dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time."
    The Kiwanis is accepting any newish tee-shirts for donation to Braeside Camp for children in Middletown. Runners and friends donated more than 400 shirts in 2018.
    The principal sponsors include Sterling Optical of Newburgh, TD Bank of Chester, and T.M. Contracting of Chester.
    Awards
    Trophies will be presented to the top three male and female runners to finish, with awards given to the top three males and females according to age category (11 and under; 12-15; 16-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69, and 70 and up.
    Trophies will also go to the first male and female to finish.
    All registered runners and walkers will be eligible for raffle prizes.
