Joan Bonomi passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was 89.

Joan was born on Sept. 2, 1932, the youngest of four children born to the late Joseph and Rose (Marasco) DeGiacomo in Yonkers.

A graduate of Commerce High School and Catherine Gibbs School of Business, Joan was a secretary at McKesson & Roberts in Yonkers prior to becoming a Medical Assistant/Office Manager for various physicians and podiatrists in Rockland County.

Joan married her husband James (Jimmy) Bonomi Sr. on June 2, 1956, in Yonkers. Together they raised their daughter Michelle and sons James(Jamie) and Joseph.

During their 58 years of marriage, Joan loved to travel with her husband. Together they cruised the Caribbean and saw many parts of Europe.

In the winter months they would become “snow birds” in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where they looked forward to seeing the friends they made over the years and their grandson’s visits. The summers were always spent on Long Beach Island in New Jersey, taking in the ocean views and salt air.

Joan was an avid reader. She enjoyed holiday family gatherings, trips to the casino, fishing with her sons and grandsons, luncheons with her girlfriends, watching soap operas, playing card and board games, especially Rummikub, with close friends and family.

She had a special relationship with tissues; there wasn’t a coat pocket that didn’t have one. She was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and Giants and could hold her own in a conversation with the best of them.

Joan was also an active member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 1167, the Saint Columba Ladies Auxiliary, the Red Hats and the Chester Senior Center. She adored Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of Workers, and was a parishioner of Saint Columba Church in Chester.

Joan is survived by her loving daughter Michelle Bonomi-Huvala and her husband Kenneth of Chester; her son Joseph Bonomi of Washingtonville; her two grandsons, Charles James (CJ) and Joseph Bonomi; and her sister Lorraine DeGiacomo; along with many cousins and her cherished fur baby, Pippin.

Joan was predeceased by her husband James Sr.; her son James Bonomi Jr; her daughter-in-law Karen Dunne Bonomi; and her two brothers Joseph (Sonny) and Francis (Frank) DeGiacomo.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Sullivan & Orange County for the wonderful care, dedication and emotional support provided to Mom and our family during this difficult time; and to all her doctors, and there were many, from Horizon Medical and Crystal Run Healthcare for all the years of care provided.

In lieu of flowers, a gift in her memory may be made to Saint Columba Church, 18 High Street, Chester, NY 10918 or Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
