Students receive 2006 Scholarship for Academic Excellence Awards
GOSHEN Nine seniors at Goshen High School were recently named recipients of the 2006 Scholarship for Academic Excellence Award. Each scholarship provides up to $1,500 per year, for up to five years of undergraduate study in New York State. The recipients are Nicholas Clemente, Alice Ford, Andrew Goyzueta, Michael Lavell, Lauren Liria, Emily Lloyd, Esther Matthews, Brian Newman, and Therese Stark. Clemente is a member of the National Honor Society, National Foreign Language Honor Society, and the tennis team. He also volunteers at Elant Nursing Home in Goshen. He will attend Boston University to major in English and pursue a career in writing. He is the son of Claudia and Laurence Clemente of Goshen. Ford is a member of the National Honor Society, National Foreign Language Society, the drama club, and the spring musical. She will major in math at the University of Vermont and pursue a career in medicine. She is the daughter of Mary Ford and Patrick Flynn of Goshen. Goyzueta has been a member of the varsity golf team since he was a sophomore, and serves as captain. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Foreign Language Honor Society, and works on the school newspaper, “Spectrum.” He will attend Davidson College and plans to be a physician. He is the son of Dr. Juan and Valerie Goyzueta of Goshen. Lavell will major in engineering at Montana State University. He is the son of Chris and Cindy Lavell of Goshen. Liria is vice-president of the National Foreign Language Society, and a member of the drama club, National Honor Society, and the spring musical. She will attend Boston University in the fall. She is the daughter of Ketty and Peter Liria of Campbell Hall. Lloyd is a member of the National Honor Society, National Foreign Language Society, and drama club, participates in the Science Olympiad and the spring musical, and is vice-president of the senior class. She will attend Lafayette College to study biology, and plans to attend dental school. She is the daughter of Maryann and Jeffrey Lloyd of Goshen. Matthews is a member of the varsity soccer and track teams, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, and National Foreign Language Honor Society, and also tutors and is a blood drive volunteer. She will either major in architectural engineering at Penn State University, or architecture at Syracuse University or the University of Virginia. She is the daughter of Bret and Fulvia Matthews of Goshen. Newman is a member of the National Honor Society, National Foreign Language Society, Mock Trial, Academic Team, and Habitat for Humanity. He will attend Colgate University in the fall. He is the son of Schuyler and Rosemary Newman of Goshen. Stark is a member of National Honor Society, spring musical, drama club, and student senate, and also serves as treasurer of the National Foreign Language Society. She will attend New York University to study art history, and someday serve as curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. She is the daughter of Joseph and Mary Stark of Goshen.
