Tuxedo Historical Society hosts an evening of reminiscences on July 30 Tuxedo - The Tuxedo Historical Society will present “Memories of the Red Apple Rest” on Thursday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at its headquarters at 7 Hospital Road in Tuxedo Park. Featured will be Sloatsburg Mayor Carl S. Wright with his entertaining reminiscence, “When The Red Apple Rest Was King.” Family members of Red Apple Rest founder Reuben Freed also will be present to tell their stories. Attendees also are encouraged to share their own Red Apple Rest experiences and to bring any photos and souvenirs to people to see. For the better part of 70 years, beginning in 1931, most everyone who motored along Route 17 from New York City to the Catskill Mountains was fed and entertained at the Red Apple Rest. Boy scouts, bus tours, ball players, Borscht Belt stars and bungalow dwellers all rested at the “Apple.” For many local teens, the Red Apple was a social headquarters and summer job. For others, it was a long-term livelihood. The program is part of Tuxedo Historical Society’s continuing effort to collect and preserve Red Apple Rest stories and artifacts. “The Red Apple Rest is a symbol of the golden age of American motor travel,” said Executive Director Deborah Harmon. “A summer evening is the perfect time to get together and take a trip down memory lane.” “Memories of the Red Apple Rest” is open to the public and admission is free. Donations will be accepted to support the Tuxedo Historical Society as it continues plans to open its permanent exhibit space. Program attendees will have an opportunity to see preliminary plans for the new exhibit. For more information, call 351-2625 or e-mail tuxedohistory@gmail.com.
