Local architect gains recognition

Goshen Emma Gonzalez-Laders, principal of EGL Architecture in Goshen, successfully completed her training and testing to become a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) AP. She took part in an accreditation workshop recently offered by Continu-Ed Seminars, also of Goshen. LEED is the rating system of the US Green Building Council. According to the point-based, performance-driven rating system, buildings get certified for demonstrated environmentally beneficial features, such as site development, water conservation, energy performance and materials used. Currently the rating system applies only to commercial projects, with a LEED for Homes pilot program, but “the design principles can be implemented in any project,” Gonzalez-Laders said. A LEED AP is someone who coordinates and oversees the design process to ensure that sound environmental and sustainability principles are properly implemented. Also, a LEED AP facilitates the building certification process. Aside from the energy conservation savings, and better indoor environmental quality, LEED certified building are eligible for tax incentives and grants.
