Goshen — Eight new sixth- and seventh-grade students at the Goshen Christian School have been chosen to serve in the school’s Goshen Christian Leadership Society. Students are selected on the basis of character, leadership potential, and a commitment to devote their time and energy to serving God, their school, and the community at large. Applicants must fill out an extensive application and receive favorable recommendations from at least two teachers and the pastor from whatever church they attend with their families. Julia Hoogenhuis, Gianna Raiola, Candace Vellenga, Kally Vallenga, Ashley Wade, and Josh Walker were all chosen from the sixth grade for this honor. Seventh-graders Dan Cione and Kaitlyn VanDalen were also inducted at the candlelight ceremony held recently at the school for parents and friends of the newest members. Over the past year, this service-orientated student group has conducted a successful blood drive, held a variety of fundraisers, and planned several schoolwide programs. They were also able to send over 40 shoeboxes as part of their Operation Christmas Child project. This was an outreach project of Samaritan’s Purse collecting, processing, and delivering gifts to children in hospitals, orphanages, refugee camps, homeless shelters, and impoverished neighborhoods. The Goshen Christian Leadership Society is supervised and mentored by Goshen Christian School teachers Rena Bast and Kym Haney. The mission of Goshen Christian School, serving the community since 1948, is to nurture the physical, academic, emotional and spiritual development of children in pre-K through grade 9. Pre-K is full day and five days a week. New for this fall is the expansion to ninth grade. Future high school expansion plans call for adding a new grade each year going forward, so that students entering their freshman year this fall will be able to graduate from Goshen Christian in 2011.
