Burke Catholic to honor its military grads
Dedicating new flagpole as part of Eagle Scout project Goshen A new flagpole located on the sports field of John S. Burke Catholic High School will be dedicated to some of its graduates this Saturday, Oct. 3, at 1:15 p.m. This is an Eagle Scout project by Florida resident and Burke senior Gannon Heiny, a member of Troop 540 in Monroe. His older brother, Patrick Heiny, a 2002 graduate of Burke, just returned from a tour in Iraq. The selfless sacrifice that his brother and many of Burke’s alumni have demonstrated was the inspiration for Heiny’s project. The memorial garden consists of a new flagpole with a bronze plaque dedicating it to those alumni that have served this country in the armed forces. The ceremony will take place prior to the 1:30 homecoming football game for Burke. The first flag to be raised will be an American flag flown over a USMC post in Iraq that was a gift to Heiny from his brother. A Marine Corps Honor Guard will be on hand for the ceremony. All students, graduates and supporters of Burke are invited and encouraged to attend.
