Brian McSherry receives Fulbright

Chester There are only five Fulbright scholars in graphic design in the world. Brian McSherry of Chester is one of them. He received the grant to study graphic design at Concordia University in Montreal from September through May. In June, he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of fine arts in communications design from the University of Buffalo. Brian is the son of Evelyn and Sean McSherry of Chester and a graduate of St. John’s School and Burke Roman Catholic High School, both in Goshen. He and his fiancee, Meghan McMahon, a nursing student at the University of Buffalo, will marry in August 2012. Evelyn McSherry said four nuns devoted to Brian prayed for his success: Sister Barbara, school principal; Sister Catherine, first-grade teacher; Sister Paraclete, former school principal; and Sister Thecla, Brian’s aunt. Monsignor James Byrnes at Burke Catholic also offered prayers. The Fulbright is one of the world’s most prestigious awards. Recipients have become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs, university presidents, journalists, artists, professors, and teachers. Forty-three Fulbright alumni have won Nobel Prizes and 78 have won Pulitzers. Fulbright grants allow students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists and artists to study abroad to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of different nations.
