Maria Geertruida Gonzalez of Middletown entered into rest on November 15, 2021. She was 86 years old.
Maria was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Rotterdam, Holland. She is the daughter of Marinus van Toorn and Elizabeth (de Haan).
After World War II, Maria worked as a manicurist in Amsterdam, Holland, and Zurich, Switzerland.
She immigrated to the United States and married Raymond Gonzalez and started her own family.
She had an enormous love for all living things and believed every creature had the right to be protected. There was always a house full of rescued animals present in her home.
Never sacrificing the responsibility as a parent first, Maria eventually opened her own popular nail salon, The Nail Trail, in Rockland County.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Raymond Gonzalez of Middletown; daughter Diane B. Gonzalez and her wife Anita Wezer; Yvonne Evans and her husband Brian; two grandchildren: Korey Evans and fiancé Ashley Nevins and Lindsay Bollbach and husband Chris; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Donovan Funeral Home, Inc, 82 South Church St., Goshen.
The Funeral Service to celebrate Maria’s life will be held 11:30 a.m., followed by a private burial.
