Redeker and Ubides running for District 2 County Legislator
Election. While there are three candidates on the ballot, only two are running for County Legislator in District 2: Democrat Jonathan Redeker and Republican Aaron Ubides. Current County Legislator James O’Donnell is listed on the Conservative line, however, he confirmed with Straus News that he is retiring and is not seeking re-election. District 2 covers Goshen, Florida, and part of Warwick.
Jonathan Redeker
Why are you running for County Legislator?
Civic involvement and improving our communities have been core values of my life as a resident and as a public school teacher. I believe that our county government should be doing more to serve its citizens and improve their quality of life. As a County Legislator, I’d ensure the government serves the needs of the people of the Second District, not just pay-to-play special interests.
What are the top three things you aim to accomplish if elected?
a.) Clean municipal water. I successfully advocated for this in Hambeltonian Park, where we now have crystal-clear water, and I will work to provide clean water for everyone in the district, offsetting the cost through the $220 million county surplus. I’ll also ensure that control of these water resources remains with our town and villages. My opponent is on record supporting the “water loop” project, which will skyrocket taxes, remove municipal control, and benefit corporations.
b.) Attract good, private-sector jobs that can support families and allow residents to live comfortably. We must create a future-ready county so young people are able to find desirable, high-paying careers right here in Orange County. No more warehouse madness.
c.) Fight to bring more county funding back to Goshen to support our infrastructure, services, and taxpayers. As the county seat, Goshen carries more than its fair share of untaxed land and county facilities, but we don’t see our fair share of investment.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
In my 20 years as a faculty member of the Goshen Schools, I never thought I’d be running for office. I’m not a politician, but my passion for this community where I’ve raised my family moved me to action. My campaign has drawn the support of Democrats, Republicans and independents because they know I will fight for the needs of the people, no matter who they are. That’s why 88% of the financial contributions to my campaign have come from everyday citizens, in contrast to my opponent who is funded almost entirely by politicians and political committees. The people of Goshen and Florida are genuine and hardworking. If given the opportunity, I’ll represent them with that same spirit — listening first, leading with integrity, and always putting people over politics.
Aaron Ubides
Why are you running for County Legislator?
I chose to run for Legislator to better serve our community. As a blue-collar worker and single parent, I understand the challenges faced by working families.
What are the top three things you aim to accomplish if elected?
Orange County has 21 legislators working effectively under Steve Neuhaus. I want to join them and contribute a practical perspective to the legislature. My goals are to:
1. Support our senior citizens and veterans
The rising cost of living is especially challenging for those on fixed incomes. I will continue to advocate for seniors and veterans, supporting tax relief and savings for veterans. I support funding for transportation programs such as GoGoGrandparent and Orange County Office for the Aging initiatives.
2. Support First Responders
Orange County supports first responders through a modern Emergency Services Center and essential programs for training, equipment, and mental health resources. As legislator, I would support providing grants to our local fire, EMS, and law enforcement to ensure our community remains safe.
3. Keep our county taxes low
Orange County’s property tax rate for 2025 is the lowest it has been since the 1960’s, an incredible attestation to the work being done by our county leaders in collaboration with our local businesses, tourism, and attractions. As legislator, I will advocate for incentives for small businesses and support initiatives that attract more visitors to our county.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I’ve lived in Orange County for over 40 years, mainly in Goshen and Florida. I have experience in a variety of trades, farm work, construction, mechanics, theater operations, management, and zoning laws. I’m a welder/fabricator and technician at Showalter’s Equipment in Goshen. I also work part-time as truck custodian and building and grounds maintenance for the Florida Fire District and serve on Warwick’s Zoning Board of Appeals.
I pride myself on working well with others, being honest, trustworthy, dedicated, and hard-working. My proudest achievement is raising my daughter and seeing her become a great mother to my grandson. I’ve volunteered for most of my adult life and believe in giving back to our community. I’m a member of the Warwick Republican Committee, the Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club, and Sons of the American Legion.
