The Committee for Families of War Veterans recently announced the Honor Salute Scholarship, a new scholarship to be awarded to graduating Hudson Valley seniors who are dependents of military service members.

“Children from military families don’t have it easy. Since our organization’s mission is to find a way to assist veterans and their families, the board felt it was time we offer the sons and daughters of those who’ve served some kind of help,” said Christian Farrell, board secretary.

The Committee will select one eligible graduating senior from each of the following counties: Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Dutchess, and Rockland to receive a $1,500 scholarship, to be applied to continuing education of the student’s choice (including internships and trade schools). Applications are open now and must be received by Monday, May 20.

Upon selection, recipients must provide proof of military dependency for the award to be granted. Further Information can be found at familiesofwarveterans.org or by emailing srenna@orangecountygov.com.

The Committee for Families of War Veterans was formed in 2005, in response to the death of a local national guard soldier in Iraq. That soldier, Lt. Louis Allen, left behind a wife and four young sons. Local resident Ray McCarthy was so moved upon the news, he established this foundation.

The Committee provides a variety of support for military families including for expenses such as auto repairs and utility payments, equestrian therapy, or emergency home repairs. It is now expanding its services to include scholarships and other supportive resources for local military families, thanks to support from ShopRite and other private and professional donors.
