The focus is orchids at Black Meadow Flora Open House

Two days of free demos and discounts on top quality orchid plants are among the highlights of the 5th anniversary open house at Black Meadow Flora in Chester this weekend. The rain-or-shine event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31. A variety of potted succulents and other foliage plants will be on sale also.

The company’s traditional spring event dedicated to orchid enthusiasts will mark the successful launch of the family-run business by owner-operator Margaret C. Bridge in 2010. Since then, the company has added a growing line of retail products and services and expanded its customer base to as far away as the Hamptons and Montauk on Long Island.

“Some days it seems like it was yesterday that we started the business, and then I remember the great number of people we’ve met and the many thousands of orchid plants we’ve sold,” said Bridge. “That we have achieved so much means a great deal to me.”

She will share the joy on the last weekend in May. Everything for sale in the greenhouse is 5 percent off, and there will be an additional $5 discount at checkout. Two free demos will be offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., including a presentation on repotting and a combined session on mounts and baskets. Repotting services are available for $5 per plant, but customers must leave their plants to be picked up during the following week.

Staff will also be available to advise on ailing orchid plants.

Registration or a purchase is not required for this service or to attend the free demos. There will be drawings for door prizes throughout the day.
