On Wednesday, May 29, 2019, Glen Arden Continuing Care Retirement Community will join an estimated 1,000 groups to celebrate the 26th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day as an official host site.

Glen Arden will hold a variety of events centering on health and fitness and join an estimated 100,000 seniors nationwide to help promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventive care.

National Senior Health & Fitness Day® will celebrate its 26th anniversary as the nation’s annual largest older adult health and wellness event. More than 100,000 older adults will participate in local health and fitness events at over 1,000 locations across the country on the same day.

This year’s theme is “Live and thrive with exercise.”

According to Sulekha Zaug, Glen Arden’s Director of Recreation, “Our offering of classes and workshops along with healthy refreshments is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make, renew and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness.”

Organized as a public/private good health partnership by the Mature Market Resource Center (MMRC), National Senior Health & Fitness Day will offer fitness activities for older adults at more than 1,000 locations including hospitals, park and recreation departments, senior centers, health clubs, retirement communities, houses of worship, health departments and other community locations. The event is always held on the last Wednesday in May as part of Older Americans Month activities.

The morning will kick off with a 10am full-body exercise class by Glen Arden’s fitness coordinator Matt Koop who has a degree in exercise and sport science, followed by an intro to mindful walking leading into a Poker Ship Walk/ Scavenger Hunt.

At noon, an introduction to Holistic Wellness Workshop will be offered and will feature demos of Tai Chi, medication, breathing exercises, and introducing spices into your everyday life designed not only for flavor but for healing properties, led by Ms. Zaug, an award-winning gymnast.

At 1 p.m. there will be a Balance and Fall Prevention Workshop with exercises and tips provided by Derek Somerville, COTA and Minisink Valley Track Coach followed by a discussion on Maintaining your health and wellness with Nancy Tolosky-Heine, RN at 2 p.m.

The event will close following 3 p.m. remarks from Village of Goshen Mayor Michael Nuzzolese.

This event is developed by Zaug. Director of Recreation at Glen Arden, who believes in delivering information on keeping yourself healthy as you age, growing old gracefully, and incorporating basic holistic healing methods into your lives. Sulekha is a former National Champion gymnast, Certified Yoga and Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Instructor, and has worked with seniors for over 15 years.
