Calling on Cuomo to relieve Chester and Newburgh schools of millions in state-imposed penalties

Assemblyman-Elect Colin Schmitt, 99th Assembly District, on Dec. 21 released a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo asking him to sign bipartisan legislation that would relieve Newburgh Enlarged City School District and Chester Union Free School District of millions of dollars in state imposed penalties. Both school districts fall within the 99th Assembly District.

Dear Governor Cuomo:

As Assemblyman-elect for the 99 District I urge you to sign bipartisan legislation A.11174 and A.11175. These bills would relieve significant state penalties that have been levied against Newburgh Enlarged City School District and Chester Union Free School District.

These penalties are due to past clerical errors related to state building aid final cost reports. If this legislation is not approved the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and Chester Union Free School District will lose millions of dollars. The loss of this funding would be devastating to students and local taxpayers in both districts.

In the past North Syracuse Central School District has seen these same penalties waived by the state. It is my hope that Newburgh and Chester also receive the same treatment.

Your timely consideration of this matter and positive action would be greatly appreciated this holiday season.

NYS Assemblyman-Elect Colin Schmitt
