Driver kills bear on Route 17

    A bear was hit and killed on Route 17 in Monroe on Wednesday morning, State Police said.
    Spokesman Trooper Steven Nevel, based at Troop F in Middletown, said the accident took place at 6:05 a.m. at eastbound mile marker 379.2, near exit 129 in Monroe.
    According to Trooper Nevel, the driver of the vehicle was not injured, but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene, Nevel said
    The bear was killed on impact, tying up traffic on the highway for about 30 minutes while the crash site was cleared, he said.
    He said it is the third sighting of a bear in the area in the last two weeks.
    Police did not have any additional information on the accident as of press time.
