Still waiting for a new world order

Three suffragettes brought to life in a Chester Historical Program surprised many in the audience when they learned that the Equal Rights Amendment, first introduced to Congress in 1923 by Alice Paul — portrayed in the program by Taylor Williams — has still not been ratified. Action by two more states is needed. The free program was held in the Chester Academy Auditorium to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women achieving the right to vote in New York and to complement the suffrage exhibit at the historical society's 1915 Erie Railroad Station Museum. As Alice Paul (1885–1977) famously said, "There will never be a new world order until women are a part of it." The other costumed re-actors from the American Historical Theater to give moving speeches were Daisy Century, who portrayed Sojourner Truth, and Kim Hanley, who portrayed Lucretia Mott.
