Medicare Expert Senta Curran CFP®: Can someone who is 65 or older who is still working for a large employer choose to disenroll from the employer plan and enroll in Medicare as a special enrollment period. In other words, there is not requirement that someone eligible for employer health coverage must elect it rather than Medicare, right? And they can sign up at any time?

Correct. The special enrollment period includes the time the person is covered by the over-20 employer plan. In other words, he can choose to go off the employer plan and enroll in Medicare any time after turning 65. As more employers cut back on health insurance, offer high -deductible plans, etc. it often makes sense to opt for Medicare over the employer plan.
