Graveside ceremony for Union soldier from Goshen

A graveside remembrance ceremony by the grave of Colonel Alexander Wilkin has been announced by Colonel Augustus van Horne Ellis Camp #124 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The gathering will be at Slate Hill Cemetery in Goshen, on May 30, Memorial Day, at 2 p.m. Wilkin was a native of Goshen and served in the Mexican War. Afterward, he became the Territorial Secretary of Minnesota Territory. During the Civil War, he served in both the 2nd and 9th Minnesota Infantry, the latter of which he commanded. He was killed in action at the Battle of Tupelo, Mississippi. The ceremony will conclude at the 124th Monument a short distance away.
