Splish, splash, Goshen has a pool

GOSHEN — News-splash for local residents: Goshen now has a community pool.
On Aug. 27, the Goshen Chamber of Commerce arranged a ribbon-cutting and officially presented the well-designed facility to the public.
With the overhead side doors opening to an outdoor patio, the six-lane, 25-yard pool facility offers a refreshing ambience. Tables with umbrellas allow members to relax comfortably on the patio after a swim.
“It’s refreshing not to see four tile walls,” said aquatics director Melissa Kubik.
The pool, as well as the tile floor around the pool, is heated, enhancing its comfort, she said.
The grand opening of the Goshen Community Pool, located in the Goshen Sports Complex on Route 17M in Goshen, is on Tuesday, Sept. 8. A full slate of programs will begin at that time.
“There’s going to be something for everyone,” said Kubik. She said "aquacize," swim lessons, open swim,s family swims, lap swims, and competitive swims, just to name a few programs, will be available.
Kicking off this fall is the first season of the Goshen High School Girls’ Varsity Swim team. The Boys’ Varsity Swim team begins competing in November.
As the head coach for the girls’ team, Kubik is pleased with the start of the training season, particularly since she was unsure of the number of athletes who would join the team. But swimmers signed up and the numbers are growing, she said.
“We’re building a close-knit family, helping each other out, working together and coming together as a team," she said. "It’s amazing — some girls are experienced and help those who aren’t.”
Besides general swim lessons, for those seeking water exercise programs, the facility offers two classes: one for general aerobic toning and another geared for rehabilitation and arthritis relief.
“Aquatics is a life skill, regardless of age or ability in the water," said Kubik, explaining that all swim lessons have age-appropriate safety measures worked into the lesson. "Knowing how to swim and have a knowledge of water safety is quintessential for everyone.”
The Goshen Community Pool is hosting two types of competitive teams: the New York Sharks Masters for ages 18 and over, and the New York Sharks Aquatics, Level 3, USA Swim Club for swimmers ages five to 18.
The pool offers month-by-month membership for individual or family or an annual fee. In addition, daily drop-ins are available.
