Rachel Shih wins schoolwide geography bee

— Eighth grader Rachel Shih placed first in the schoolwide competition of the National Geography Bee Competition at C.J. Hooker Middle School and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship.

The school-level Bee, in which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 27th annual National Geographic Society. Rachel will take a written qualifying test to determine whether she will compete at the state-level competition.

All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $50,000 college scholarship, at the national competition in May, held in Washington,

The National Geographic Bee is an educational program of the National Geographic Society. Its nationwide geography competition for students in grades 4 to 8 is designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography.
