GOSHEN — During the last days of summer, new backpacks in an array of colors and stuffed with school supplies arrived in Goshen to benefit students in need.
Miki Dietrichsen of Better Homes and Gardens, honor student Ryan Metzger John S. Burke Catholic School, and Renee Matalucci of the Youth Ending Hunger Club all worked together to make sure no student would be left in need.
Ryan who raised more $300 from individuals, businesses, and the Goshen Rotary Club. Donations came from businesses and community groups in the Goshen/Middletown area (see list).
After all the supplies were collected, Youth Ending Hunger Club members Michael, Alexis, and Victoria Jakakas, along with Daniel and Michael DeRosa, helped pack the backpacks for local students. Retired teachers Regina Botens (club founder), Kathi Decker, and Catherine Faller, as well as parent volunteers Debbie DeRosa, Mary Arne, Toula Jakakas, Meri O'Hara, and parent advisor Renee Matalucci, helped deliver the packs.
The community's labor of love will help make sure the students who have received the packs will have a more productive year, with all the resources they need in hand.
