— For the second year in a row, fifth-grader Jackson was named champion of the school-wide National Geographic Bee at Goshen Intermediate School. Fifth graders Virginia Valens and James Dimitrov won second and third place, consecutively.

The National Geographic Bee is a nationwide competition of fourth through eighth graders held in thousands of schools across the United States. The Bee was very competitive this year at GIS, with only 25 students qualifying to participate.

As the champion of the school-level Bee, Jackson will take a challenging written test which gives him the chance to qualify for the State level competition. Winners at the State level have the opportunity to compete in the national championship Bee in May, the winner of which receives a $50,000 scholarship.

This year’s Geography Bee qualifiers were Colin Kimiecik, Daniel Hartley, Emily Mathys, Matthew Maccagnan, Evan Pavlik, Quentin Riley, Ben Thurtle, Kiara Paulino, Lauren Carroll, Bridgette Bennis, Virginia Valens, Antonio Diaz, Emily Dong, Grace Gardner, Christopher Whitney, Jackson Diglio, James Dimitrov, Nicholas Limbert, Nolan McDermott, Jason Martin, Luca Boyle, Gabe Brugellis, Jason LaCosta, Regan Sullivan and Emma Ryan.
