Firefighters share their passion during recruitment day

GOSHEN — Goshen’s three fire companies — Cataract Engine & Hose Co., Dikeman Engine & Hose Co., and Minisink Hook & Ladder Co. — recently joined forces in honor of “Recruit NY Day.”
Members demonstrated fire-fighting procedures, talked with future firefighters, and, mainly, answered questions for those thinking about joining the fire district.
“It’s an open house,” said Joe DeNisco, Minisink Hook & Ladder president. "We show what we do and hopefully we’ll get new members."
The recruitment event was held at Minisink Hook & Ladder Co. on North Church Street, where volunteer firefighters offered plenty of good will, friendly talk, and lots of food to those who stopped to learn more about being a volunteer firefighter. Many who stopped brought their wives and children — who are always fascinated with fire-fighting equipment, especially fire trucks — had a great time.
The hit of the day was a hand-made “house” with artificial flames in the windows. Children battled the “fire” using a real fireman’s hose with real water until knocking down the “flames,” putting the fire out. The house was made by firefighter William Babcock III.
Chief Elmer Budd was on hand welcoming visitors. Last October Chief Budd was honored with receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. Born and raised in the village of Goshen, the Chief has been a member of the Goshen Fire Department since 1959.
In case you missed this event, the fire district will hold another open house during Fire Prevention Week in October.
“We’ll teach people how to be safe in their homes,” said DeNisco. "Of course, we’ll have food and drinks."
The date is yet to be determined.
