Esther Donohue, the 'running lady,' is recovering after accident

Morning commuters in the town of Chester and Village of Florida are no strangers to the frequent sight of Esther Donohue, affectionately referred to by many as the “running lady.”

For the better part of 20 years, she has trained on a daily basis, ritually running four to six miles each day. Encounters on the road over the years have included hundreds of familiar waves from fellow runners, cyclists, and the occasional black bear in the road.

On Monday morning, Dec. 24, she was struck by a motorist and critically injured while running on Glenmere Road, in the town of Chester. Her injuries included rib fracture, a subdural hematoma, and severe concussion. She was airlifted by Medivac helicopter to Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, where she was treated by a team of trauma physicians in the intensive care unit.

On Christmas day, the family reported that her breathing tube was removed, and that she was breathing on her own.

Esther Donohue is a clinical ultrasound specialist, in the employ of Toshiba Electronics, and is the wife of Dr. Art Donohue, a chiropractor in Chester. The family has indicated that there are challenges in the days ahead, and ask for the thoughts and prayers of residents in the communities of Chester and Florida.
