GOSHEN — On Wednesday evenings these days, the Goshen Senior Center is filled with people of all ages making moves on chess boards.

Children and adults are eager to try new strategies during these sessions. Ed Dubin, with his deep knowledge of how each piece works, leads the players, talking with enthusiasm about the history of the 1,500-year-old game and how it's played.

"I think that if a student knows why a particular chess piece moves the way it does, he or she will have a better understanding of how to use that piece in the game," he said.

The air suddenly bursts with excitement as someone calls out "Check Mate!"

Kate Schmidt, the Goshen Parks and Recreation commissioner, oversees the program.

To join the fun, visit the Goshen Senior Center, 100 Trotter Circle, Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 through Aug. 6.
