An old-time spectacle marches on

GOSHEN — The triennial fire parade in Goshen on Sept. 8 was a grand spectacle that won’t be repeated until 2015.
Goshen’s fire companies — Cataract Engine & Hose, Dikeman Engine & Hose, and Minisink Hook & Ladder — presented a fine parade, thanks to guest New York companies from Orange, Ulster, and Westchester counties; the Franklin Fire Department from Sussex County, N.J.; and even a company from Prince Georges County, Md.
Color Guards held flags proudly in the stiff breeze. Firemen in immaculate uniforms marched in crisp precision, interspersed with school and professional bands from all over the region. Pipe and drum bands in colorful kilts played stirring music. Huge modern trucks and small antique fire equipment were all polished to a high gleam.
Judges from the Westchester County Parade Judges Association, clipboards in hand, inspected everything meticulously. Unfortunately, because of the winds, only three of the expected 12 floats were in the line of march.
The storm was perfectly timed. Not long after the parade ended and onlookers scurried for cars and home, the skies darkened and the rain poured down.
