Police: Driver's frosted window leads to accident with jogger

CHESTER — The Town of Chester Police have charged Susan Deane, 59, of Chester with second-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree assault, misdemeanors, following an investigation into the accident that seriously injured jogger Esther Donohue, 50, of Chester.

Investigation and witness accounts revealed that Deane had not adequately cleared her windshield of frost and appeared not to have seen Donohue prior to striking her, police said.

Donohue was jogging appropriately against traffic on Glenmere Road around 8 a.m. on Christmas Eve when she was struck from behind by the 1994 Toyota operated by Deane, which had crossed the double yellow line into the oncoming lane before the collision, according to the police report.

Donohue was treated at the scene by Chester EMS and Care 1. She was then transported to a helicopter landing zone set up by the Chester Fire Department and flown to Westchester Medical Center, where she remained sedated for several days before undergoing surgery.

Deane is due to appear in town court on Jan. 15.
