Patriotic fun abounds at Great American Weekend

Visitors who attended Goshen’s 38th annual Great American Weekend, July 6 and 7, were once again treated to two days of fun, food, plenty of crafts, and many antiques.
Although Saturday presented some weather obstacles, like high humidity and intermittent showers, it didn’t seem to dampen people’s spirits for the day. When the rains came, they scattered for cover. When the rain stopped, people resurfaced and carried on, enjoying all the activities as if it hadn’t rained at all.
This hearty American spirit of independence and freedom carried out through the days, starting with a rousing organ concert on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, featuring patriotic songs, like “The Star Spangled Banner,” “My Country Tis of Thee,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The organist, Jonathan Hall, praised the audience for the strength of their combined voices.
How about trying bull riding or wall climbing for new, challenging experiences? The opportunities were there, and many were brave enough to meet the challenge.
The younger set was happy to try the amusement rides. For many it was their first-time challenge to meet, hopefully happily.
The crowd — many wearing patriotic clothing in red, white, and blue — browsed from one vendor tent to another, speaking with the owners about their interesting wares, like at Little Candle House, Andy’s Sandals and Tie Dye, Country Crafts, and The Magic Garden, among the many dealers.
The food tent was full of tasty options, as well as vendors peppered throughout the show, offering kettle korn, ice cream sandwiches, slushies, oversized warm pretzels, fresh out-of-the-oven pizza, and lots of water. Amy’s Kitchen was on hand, giving free samples of their well-liked mac and cheese and pesto tortellini.
Sunday’s weather was ideal, and the large crowd that attended was still enjoying the show until closing time at 5 p.m.
