The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded $9.3 million to replace 473 diesel school buses with new buses that will reduce pollutants linked to asthma and lung damage. Six winners in New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico will replace 39 buses through the rebate program to reduce emissions and exposure to particulate matter and nitrogen oxides for children at schools, bus stops, and on the buses themselves.

Diesel exhaust can harm health, especially in children, who have a faster breathing rate than adults and whose lungs are not yet fully developed.
