It's reassuring to see a young person make a mark not only in athletics but in the classroom too.

Burke Catholic High School senior golfer and all-around athlete Juliana Gesztesi is the captain of her team. Her academic honors are also many and impressive.

“Juliana is an example of the ideal captain because she has been a member of the golf team for all four yours of her scholastic career,” said Burke Catholic head coach Matt McGinnis. "Her experience playing since she was a freshman has helped her relate to the new players as well as some of the returning players with less match experience. Finally, the confidence she has in her herself and leadership abilities has allowed me to lean on her to help our young team.

“Juliana had the lowest score for our team in our league victories over O'Neill and Port Jervis. Juliana has been hitting her irons better. She has improved her distance with her irons as well. Juliana is always teaching and helping the younger players. She is good at dissecting a player's swing and make suggestions that might be helpful. This is helpful to not only her teammates but me as well. If we have a practice with all 15 members, she provides an extra set of eyes to help other players.”

Juliana's academic achievements include, but are not limited to, Principal’s List (all four years of high school), National Honors Society, President of Burke Catholic Honors Society, AP Scholar with Distinction and selected Honors/Scholarship Program at Northeastern University.

She began golfing competitively as a 14-year-old high school freshman.

“I liked the idea of competing against myself, but still being part of a team,” Juliana said. “Golf seemed to appeal to my interests in many ways.

“I believe I recover well after a bad shot and/or a bad hole. I try not to stress too much about how I’m playing and it helps me concentrate on the current shot.”

She would like to improve upon on both her starts (first hole) and finishes (final hole) on the course and also to qualify for the Section IX Tournament this spring.

“We always aim to have three wins a year,” she said. “So far, we’ve achieved that every year I’ve played. This year, we have two so far, so I am hoping for at least one more.

“My coach has always encouraged me to enjoy myself, above all else. He doesn’t play golf and obsess about scores, so he makes sure I don’t either. He has always been supportive no matter how I play and that’s the kind of coaching every athlete hopes for.”

The Section IX Girls Golf Championship is scheduled for May 20 and May 22 at Apple Greens Golf Course.
