CHESTER - A former resident and Sterling Park ranger is scheduled to provide information on the "Great Chain" that helped hold back British troops during the Revolutionary War, according to the town's historical society.

The program is scheduled for 2 p.m. on March 23, at the 1915 Erie Station, located at 19 Winkler Place, in historical downtown Chester.

Doc Bayne, a former town resident and Sterling Forest Park ranger will present a program on "The Chain That Saved the Colonies."

In order to stop the British invasion of the New England colonies during the American Revolution, Peter Townsend, of Chester, manufactured a "Great Chain" for the Continental Army at Sterling Forest.

It was placed across the Hudson River at West Point.

Bayne's presentation focusses on how he discovered the forge that made the Great Chain in the Sterling Forest, and he will share the history of the iron industry that started in 1736 at Sterling Forest, and how the Sterling Forge was used to create the Great Chain that was placed across the Hudson River at West Point.

The lecture and multimedia presentation is sponsored by the The Chester Historical Society and the Town and Village of Chester.

Refreshments will be served.
