Editor's note: NYS Attorney General Letitia James issued the following statement on the passage of Jose Peralta New York State Dream Act in the State Legislature on Jan. 23, which ensures that children in New York have the same access to state loans and grants no matter their legal status as American citizens. To be eligible, a person must have a New York high school diploma or the equivalent or meet the requirements for in-state tuition (see related article at chroniclenewspaper.com):

Today is an important day for our immigrant communities, but also for New Yorkers who believe in equal access to education for all. Immigration status should never be a reason that an individual cannot pursue higher education and with the passage of the Dream Act, we are getting one step closer to supporting thousands of students and families. I applaud the Legislature for acting swiftly to pass this critical measure that will truly change lives.

Letitia James

Attorney General of New York
