Orange County sold to big business

Our Orange County Executive, Chairman of the legislature, Orange County Partnership (OCP), Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and town officials can’t sell our county to big business fast enough. They do this under the disguise of economic development.

The town of Goshen boards threw out the Comprehensive Plan and all the protections on the books to sell the town of Goshen to Legoland. The supervisor was mesmerized by colorful plastic blocks, big money, and a company who said they wanted to be a good neighbor. Three years into the project and Legoland is an environmental disaster and the economic benefit to Goshen has yet to be seen.

The approval process of Legoland opened the floodgates to big business in surrounding towns. The OCP was busy selling our agricultural lands, the IDA was busy calculating large PILOTS, and our county officials were busy changing the zoning laws. None of this benefits the residents or the towns.

• Goshen: In addition to Legoland, three large warehouses, three hotels and a restaurant.

• Montgomery: Medline a 1.2M square-foot warehouse to be built on prime agricultural land.

• Montgomery: Project Sailfish a 1.1M square-foot warehouse being built on wetlands.

• Chester: Proposed Great Wolf Lodge water park to be built in a community neighborhood.

All these developers are from out of state or foreign countries. They have no alliance to the town residents or our quality of life. OCP offers them land, the IDA generously hands out PILOTS, and our county officials tell us how wonderful everything will be. Pay to play at its best.
