— Students at Burke Catholic High School recently welcomed children from House on the Hill Day Care Center to their school to provide them with a day of fun, education and nourishment. The children in attendance also left with books donated by Burke Catholic families to enjoy at home.

A small day care service in Goshen, House on the Hill works specifically to teach children of immigrant farm workers, and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Eleven children from House on the Hill visited Burke Catholic on Jan. 8. Waiting for them were crafts and snacks. The theme of the event was the celebration of the Feast of the Three Kings. Spanish teacher Jennifer Rodriguez’s Spanish 4 students performed a scene from the nativity to entertain the children.

A lot of planning went into organizing the event. Guidance counselor Jo Ellen Nemeth worked in cooperation with junior Colette Higgins.

“The children were so excited!” said Ms. Nemeth. “When they first came in they were a little nervous because of the new environment. Once they settled in and started doing activities they were so happy to be working with our students.”

The Burke Catholic Chapter of the National English Honors Society sponsored a holiday book drive and donated the books to the children from House on the Hill.

“We did a superb job collecting books," said English teacher Melissa Ross. "Every kid went home with three!”
