Legoland: At what price progress?

To the Editor:

Is the construction of a massive amusement park in a small town really progress? Many say "yes" while others vehemently say "no."

Individuals and groups that are opposed to the proposed Legoland theme park realistically envision the nightmare situation not only on Route 17 but all the other roadways as well. If residents of the county really think an overlay ramp will solve all the traffic problems, they are seriously mistaken. Your commute will take longer. Air pollution will increase. With the increased volume of automobiles in the county, your auto insurance rates will most likely increase as well. Indeed, this is not just a Goshen issue but a county issue. Many supporters of Legoland like to downplay “quality of life” as a factor for the park’s construction but it is so significant. Goshen and Orange County will change and it will change rapidly. The floodgates will be open for other parks, affordable housing, high density housing, unnecessary hotels, you name it, it will come.

And at what cost? Our compromised health, the possible increase in crime, overcrowded schools? All of those scenarios and others will happen if that monstrosity of a theme park is built.
