Spencer Effron is the new fire commissioner in Chester

— Spencer Effron is the new fire commissioner in Chester, after a three-hour contest on Dec. 12.

Betty Ann Reilly, secretary for the Chester fire district, said Effron, a 26-year member of the Chester Fire Department, won 67 votes, while John Grasso, a driver with the Trout Brook Fire Company, won 55 votes.

Effron's term begins on Jan. 1, 2018, and runs until Dec. 31, 2022.

Effron currently serves as lieutenant of the fire police. He owned and operated his own business for 45 years and has two college-aged children.

The Chester Fire District encompasses all of the Town of Chester and parts of Goshen and Blooming Grove. The district's Board of Fire Commissioners oversees the Chester Fire Department.

The department has a chief and two assistant chiefs who run the firematic aspect of the district. Each company has a captain.

The Chester Fire Department has three fire companies:

Walton Engine & Hose Company, Main Street, Chester

Sugar Loaf Engine Company, 1408 Kings Highway, Sugar Loaf (voting location)

Trout Brook Engine & Hose Company, 712 Lakes Road, Monroe
