  • Early 1900s photo of St. Paul's provided by the Town of Chester Historian

Chester historian Clifton Patrick came through with a correct answer to last week's clue, plus some great local background along with an historic photo. He writes:

"This is a view of the exterior of St. Paul's Church Guild Room, 101 Main St, Chester, NY 10918, as seen from Maple Ave. From 'The First Hundred Years (A History of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Chester, NY),' by Marjorie Nehrich: 'A clipping of March, 1898, 'Chester, The trustees of the Episcopal Church intend to start next week the excavation for the foundation walls, and the work will be pushed forward rapidly. Miller Bros. will do the work.' Rev. James Holmes McGuinness, who served from 1897 until his death in 1947, 'was appointed by the Vestry as a committee of one to raise funds for the proposed addition to the church and to proceed with the work. The addition would provide a room 26 feet by 60 feet, and a large kitchen with a 26 feet by 26 feet Guild room on the second floor. Theodore Miller and Son and John Halstead were the contractors, The first use of the new parish house was August 31, 1919.' Attached is an early 1900s photo postcard of St. Paul's before the addition. (From the archives of the Chester Historical Society)."

John Benson offers a fond memory: "St. Paul's Church at the corner of Maple Ave & Main St. In this place many an old time Chesterite went to kindergarten downstairs in the basement. The beloved Mrs. Carmen was the teacher there in the 1958-59 school year."

Matt Van Der Meulen of Chester writes, "This is the side of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chester. The church is on Main Street but this picture was taken from the side on Maple Avenue."

Others to get it right are the Deshler family and Erle VanDeBogart. Congratulations to all.

Thank you for playing along.
