Pick your 'Nutcracker'

December performances planned by the Hudson Valley Dance Theatre, The Dancer’s Studio, and the American Youth Ballet

Several renditions of a favorite Tchaikovsky ballet, "The Nutcracker," are being offered around Orange County this holiday season.

The Hudson Valley Dance Theatre, The Dancer’s Studio, and the American Youth Ballet are all offering up their interpretations of this holiday classic.

Hudson Valley Dance TheatreBallet students will perform "The Nutcracker, Short and Sweet," with narration written by Anastasia Edson and spoken by Beth Maurer. The show is for audiences ages 3 and older.

Under the direction of Aggie Kimple and Annie Cerone, featuring the choreography of Helen McLennan, Annie Cerone, and Aggie Kimple, the company features dancers from around Orange County, including Brooke Jackson as Clara, Anna Liba and Katy Rolon as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Katie Yankovich as Dew Drop, Courtney Jacobs as the Snow Queen, and Bryan Uhl as Drosselmeyer.

The first performance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2 and 6 p.m., at Cornwall High School, 10 Dragon Drive, New Windsor. The second is Saturday, Dec. 16, at 2 and 6 p.m., at Goshen Middle School, 41 Lincoln Ave, Goshen.

Advance tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for children 10 and under, available at Dance & Music Design School, Main St., Cornwall (call 534-9671). Tickets will also be sold at the door prior to performances for $16.

The Hudson Valley Dance Theatre is a not-for-profit corporation, registered by the New York State Department of Education for its commitment to provide opportunities for participation in and enjoyment of the art of dance in the community.

American Youth BalletThe American Youth Ballet will present "Nutcracker" at Middletown High School, 30 Gardner Avenue Extension, Middletown.

It features guest principle dancers from the New Jersey Ballet Company.

This onetime event will take place on Friday, Dec. 1, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Dancers StudioThe Land of the Sweets Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy, to be held at the Warwick Center for the Performing Arts, 63 Wheeler Avenue, Warwick, on Dec. 2 and 3, is an interactive experience that includes a special presentation of "Nutcracker"'s Act 2, followed by a proper tea.

The ballet features the Warwick Dance Collective and students from the Warwick Center for the Performing Arts performing as Clara, Prince, Sugar Plum Fairy and supporting character dancers.

Guests get to mingle with cast members while nibbling on sweets and sipping on tea.

Guests ages 14 and under can schedule a hair and makeup session, for $15 per child, before each performance. Call 986-2466 to make an appointment.

Performances will be held at noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2; and noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3. Tickets are $5 for children ages 5 and under, $15 for guests ages 6-12, and $20 for adults.

The Dancer’s Studio was a dance and performing arts staple in the community for more than 30 years under the direction of Lucinda (Cindy) Henry.
