About Veterans Day
On Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m., an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning in 1919, Nov. 11 became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

This year Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, falls on a Saturday. That makes it tempting to take a full blown weekend getaway. It’s a day off from school. There’s sure to be sales bonanzas at local retailers, and, for many, possibly a day off from work.

Since Veteran’s Day is always celebrated on the actual date designated for celebrating veterans from our armed forces, Nov. 11, it should be a little easier to resist skipping any observances. You can enjoy your day off from school, visit the stores for great sales, or do nothing at all. But at 11 am on Saturday, November 11th, make it a point to celebrate the freedoms you enjoy to do any and all of those things by celebrating the veterans of past, present and future.

The Goshen commemoration of Veteran’s Day will take place Saturday promptly at 11 a.m. in Church Park at the Veteran’s Memorial (on South Church Street across from Donovan’s Funeral Home). Goshen’s American Legion Post # 377 organizes this yearly event, with help from VFW Post #1708. American Legion Post #377 Commander James Heslop reminds members of all local veterans groups and the general public alike that after the service, there will be lunch served at Suresky’s Auto from noon to 3 p.m. The general manager at Suresky’s, Jeff Muscemici, reminds “all veterans from all branches of the service as well as their friends, families and anyone who wants to attend are invited. Naturally, there are no strings, obligations, costs, fees or charges to anyone wanting to attend.”

Ray Quattrini, commander of Heslop, VFW Post #1708, and everyone at Suresky’s are asking everyone to spread the word and look forward to seeing many faithful, patriotic Americans on this true day of remembrance and honor. No more excuses, show up. Every day is a day we should be thankful for our veterans, but this Saturday is a chance to publicly acknowledge the debt of gratitude to any man or woman who has been prepared to put their lives on the line for our freedom.
