GOSHEN — Heather Hendershot on Sept. 8 began her new position as director of Pupil Personnel Services at the Goshen Central School District.

She replaces Deirdre Hallinan, who recently retired.

Hendershot comes to Goshen from the Fallsburg Central School Districmt where she held the same position for the past six years.

Coming to Goshen is a lot like coming home for Hendershot, who was raised in Goshen.

“It’s a great community, and I loved growing up here,” she said, whose first job in high school was at Baxter’s Pharmacy, and who also worked as a dispatcher for the police department in the early 2000s. “I always told myself that if the opportunity to work in Goshen ever arose, I’d jump on it.”

Hendershot received a bachelor’s degree from SUNY New Paltz and began her career teaching elementary students in the Middletown City School District, where her interest in special education began.

“Several of my students were struggling and I wanted so badly to figure out how to help them succeed,” she said.

She received a master’s degree from Mount Saint Mary College in special education and her administrative certification from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. After 15 years in the classroom, she became assistant director of PPS at Middletown before moving onto the director position at Fallsburg.

“I’m a problem-solver by nature,” said Hendershot. “My goal is to figure out why a student is struggling and then create a plan for success. It’s an absolute joy to see a once struggling child respond and thrive.”

Hendershot has been with the district for only a short time, but she’s excited to call Goshen her home — again.

“Working here is exactly how I imagined it to be,” said Hendershot. “The staff is wonderful, and I’m enjoying getting to know the students and the culture of our schools. It recharges you and reminds you of why you got into the field in the first place.”
