"Great things are happening. As long as our village has good people that’s all that matters. If we're a close village and everyone knows each other and is willing to give a helping hand, we'll do well."
Michelle Deshler

— Doing some spring cleaning? Thinking about throwing out that old chair or lamp?

If you live in the village of Chester, you might want to hold off for a bit.

Chester will be holding a village-wide yard sale on June 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain date is June 11). It's also the date of the Chester Historical Society's big annual yard sale. Other organizations or churches may want to take advantage of the same date to hold, if not a yard sale, then maybe a bake sale or other fundraiser that could benefit from additional visitors to the village in that day. Businesses might consider offering some specials.

Sound like a plan? That's because it is. It's the brainchild of resident Michelle Deshler, who introduced the wildly popular Holiday Parade to the village last December. Just like with the Holiday Parade, the yard sale idea came to her while she was touring other locales.

"I went to other yard sales in Montgomery and Cornwall-on-Hudson," she said. "They're great draws and they bring a lot of traffic. You can turn your trinkets into treasure."

Deshler and the Historic Downtown Committee will be compiling lists organized by village streets with the addresses of participants. Let them know as soon as possible if you want to participate, and they'll add your address to the lists, which will be available around town. Organizers hope residents will post easily visible signs on their street on June 10 to alert drivers.

Village residents who wish to participate may enter their name and email address or send inquiries to voccommunity@yahoo.com, or call or text 845-401-0476.

Other community events are on tap:

The Village of Chester will also have concerts on selected Tuesdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the parking area behind village hall (47 Main St.), from May 9 through Sept. 19 (except August), thanks to generous support from friends and local businesses.

Deshler said local businesses have donated the money for these concerts. She also said Mike Farrow, a local businessman, who organizes the annual festival and car show, to be held this year on Aug. 12 and 13, was amazing to work with, and "contributed a lot of great ideas and a wealth of knowledge about how to organize things and get things off the ground."

The village plans to build a bandstand in the parking area behind village hall. Senator Bill Larkin is assisting the village in applying for the funding. The area will be known as "Larkin Green."

There are even plans to hold a holiday decorating contest for village homes.

"Great things are happening," Deshler said. "As long as our village has good people that’s all that matters. If we're a close village and everyone knows each other and is willing to give a helping hand, we'll do well."
