Jeweler's shop collects thousands of books for prisoners

GOSHEN — A few years ago, Adrienne Crawford heard about a need and decided to do something to fill it.

The Orange County Jail needs books to give inmates a way to fill their time and improve their minds.

As owner of Goshen Jewelers in the village, Crawford knows her shop is easy to find, for anyone who wants to support this all-volunteer, book-gathering project.

Her strategy worked! The small handwritten sign in her front window has already produced thousands of books.

Working alone, usually on a weekly basis, she lugs cartons of books to her car and drives them to the jail, where she gets a deputy's assistance carting them inside.

“People bring all kinds of books,” said Crawford — fiction, nonfiction, informational and how-to books, dictionaries, religious books, including Bibles.

Crawford asks that you keep this book collection in mind when you’re moving or downsizing.

“Books are hard to dispose of now, and you never know — the ones you donate here might make a difference in someone’s life,” she said.

“We’ve gotten a lot of books from that little sign,” she said, pointing to her storefront window. “Sgt. Smith at the jail said more are needed as the library is in dire need of books.”

This is an ongoing project, and not a temporary one, to collect all types of books for the Orange County Jail.
