MIDDLETOWN — U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-Cold Spring) announced on Thursday that $11.5 million in federal funds has been made available to Orange County to help cover the cost of rebuilding from Hurricane Irene.

Dain Pascocello, spokesperson for County Executive Steve Neuhaus, said there will actually be $11.8 million in funds available.

Hurricane Irene caused widespread destruction throughout Orange County in 2011.

According to Maloney's office, the funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development will be made available through a community development block grant that the county can use to give to local towns.

The Orange County Office of Community Development will be handling the review of which projects will get the money. So far, the cities of Middletown, Newburgh and Port Jervis have all submitted lists of projects to be reimbursed for.

The county can aid towns and cities which weren't able to get reimbursement for cleanup and rebuilding work from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or through insurance.

The funds could be available by the end of the year.
