Shouldn't this leachate be investigated?

Editor's note: The following letter was sent to the Orange County executive and other county officials.

Out for a nature photo shoot on the Wallkill River/Cheechunk Canal...only to find what appears to be — again — leachate discharging from below the Orange County Landfill's banks along the Cheechunk Canal. I believe I got photos of 5 separate spots leaking what appears to be leachate.

Has the Orange County Landfill reported this to the regulating authority? Wonder if they tested it? Wonder what its impacts are to the river, wildlife and the aquifer the landfill sits over are? What did the regulating authority do a couple of years ago when they had what appears to be this very same problem...apparently whatever they did it did not solve the problem. Wonder if we are going to get the "It's iron fixing bacteria" explanation again?

Things that make you go hmmm....

I think many people believe or think that regulatory agencies are supposed to be looking out for our waters, our health and the environment. While I understand that there have been huge cutbacks, how long until it starts to impact what appears to be a principal aquifer? Who's fault is it — the Orange County Landfill or the agency that is allowing this to happen what appears to be over and over again?
