NEW WINDSOR — A 46-year-old Hudson Valley man is facing assault charges after his pit bull was shot and killed during an altercation with a police officer.

New Windsor town police say two officers were called to an Orange County residence early Wednesday night when Gregory Hines tried to start a fight. When police told Hines he had to leave, Hines became abusive, removed the dog's leash, and began to approach them.

Despite being hit by a stun gun, Hines continued to fight and ordered his pit bull to attack. One officer suffered a leg bite, then pulled his gun and shot the dog once in the head. The animal later died.

Hines is being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
