New York county commits to green energy purchases

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Ulster County in the Hudson Valley is committing itself to green energy purchases.

Ulster County Executive Mike Hein has signed an executive order requiring the county to buy all of its electricity though 2015 from renewable energy sources. Hein said June 5 that the government must lead by example when it comes to finding alternatives to unsustainable fossil fuels.

Under the order, the county will begin purchasing renewable energy certificates for all of its electricity. Hein said the certificates will offset 7,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year from conventional electricity production.
