— The Chester Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind Team is going to the Worlds competition in Ames, Iowa, this May, after kicking butt at the states in Binghamton on April 12.

The team needs the community's help getting to Iowa to the tune of $15,000, and so their next challenge is raising lots of dough.

"Never has an elementary team made it to World's for OM — this is AMAZING!" says team coach Wendy Murray. "They chose the building problem which is extremely difficult. They needed to develop a structure with balsa wood that would hold hundreds of pounds while incorporating the theme of Earth. These children, this team, came up with the solution that they felt the Earth needed help: that nature, the sea and its inhabitants as well as the lack of fossil fuels were a reason to call to everyone that it was TIME — that the 'weight of the world' was too much and we needed help!! What these elementary students succeeded in doing was insurmountable!"

You can help. Besides sending money, you can eat at the Chester Diner on Wednesday, April 30. Fifteen percent of your bill will go directly to the Odyssey team.

And hold on to your appetite for May 9 too, when the team plans to host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Save the date.

There will be coin drops at Shoprite on April 23 (4-8 p.m.) and April 30 (4-8 p.m.)

There's also internet fundraising. You can make donations at www.gofundme.com/8brfto.

"We are so proud of their achievement but need your help," Murray said. "We are looking to local businesses for any type of financial support to assist in the trip to Ames. Our desire is to make this an extremely memorable experience while our Chester children compete against teams from Japan, Germany, England, etc. They are so determined and ready to go, they want and expect to win. Their determination is endless and desire to prove themselves is inspiring."

For more information call Murray at 469-5792 or 914-755-9036. To make a donation, make checks payable to Wendy Murray and in the memo write Chester OM.

Every bit helps.
