— New York state transportation officials say an eight-mile stretch of Interstate 84 on the Pennsylvania border will be reduced to one lane in each direction as work gets underway on a $40 million project to improve highway bridges.

The Department of Transportation says the work began March 10 in the eastbound lanes. I-84 eastbound will be reduced from two lanes to one in each direction from Exit 1 at Port Jervis in New York to Exit 53 in Pike County, Pa.

The westbound side will be down to one lane starting March 17. The lane closures will be in place until the end of the year.

Crews will be rehabilitating bridges carrying I-84 over the Delaware and Neversink rivers and county Routes 15 and 16.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.
