— Students in Marion Herring’s second grade class at Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School are learning about the evolution of communication and have explored past communication platforms such as the telegraph and typewriter. They’ve also discussed the evolution of popular communication tools, such as the telephone, radio and televisions.

On March 7, the students continued their lesson with Shari Sentlowitz of SONY’s Education Technology Department. Via videoconference, the students learned how Sentlowitz communicates with clients from around the world without leaving her desk by utilizing modern communication tools such as Skype, e-mail, blogging, social media and texting. Sentlewitz discussed how modern technology allows people to reach a wider audience and relay information more quickly — a great benefit both professionally and socially.

Sentlowitz also talked about how the way she communicates has changed.

“Modern communication is more efficient,” she said. “I can share a lot of information very quickly, and it’s a lot more fun than it used to be.”
