— Chester Town Supervisor Steve Neuhaus was awarded the New York State Military Commendation Medal on March 9 in Albany for his actions during Hurricane Sandy.

The Commendation acknowledges Neuhaus’ “outstanding achievements and exceptional performance of duty in keeping with the highest traditions of Naval service” and that the Commendation “reflects great credit” on his service. It further stated that Neuhaus led the four-boat detachment and crew on missions in Jamaica Bay and the waters off Breezy Point and Rockaway sections of Queens, and “under his guidance, the boat crews conducted missions to seek out any missing souls, lost vessels, and alleviate the situation.”

The award and medal were presented to Neuhaus by Captain Ten Eyck B. “Trip” Powell, III, Commander, Northern Command.

Steve Neuhaus serves as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserves currently assigned to a Seabee Battalion. He was activated for service with the State of New York following the disaster of Hurricane Sandy. Upon receiving the award, Neuhaus credited those who worked beside him. “The men and women who served under my command share in this Commendation with me,” says Neuhaus. “Service is a team effort and I am proud of all of the sailors who served with me. It was an honor for me to be in the presence of such outstanding Americans.”
